The event celebrates communities that have survived conflict. It will be a weekend of art, storytelling, Guyanese mythology and readings. Saturday's guest speaker will be Sheila Melzak, consultant child and adolescent psychotherapist from the Baobab Survivors organisation. Sheila will be sharing her experiences of using art and storytelling in the rehabilitation of child soldiers. I hope you will be able to attend. Refreshments will be provided. Including my famous homemade lemonade.

Journeys through Childhood

Journeys through Childhood is a visual exploration of the world of the child on its journeys to adulthood. Set in Guyana and England, we are presented with detailed oil paintings and drawings that capture a colourful and fragile world. Adults have a presence that is both nurturing and threatening. Family, friends and strangers go about the daily rituals of life, constructing environments in which children develop a sense of identity and individuality. The childhood pleasures and terrors inspired by stories and myths are depicted in paintings of mythology and the everyday. The questioning eyes of adults and children stare back at the viewer with interest, challenging us to remember our own childhood.
